Mr. Canul is Managing Director & Founder of De Computis, a professional services company (PSC) that provides a full range of tax, accounting and advisory services.
For more than 17 years, Mr. Canul has led an exemplary career in the fields of accounting and finance for various public, private and not-for-profit foundations. Prior to the successful growth of De Computis, Mr. Canul also excelled in the corporate arena with firms such as Public Allies (a national non-profit organization), ExxonMobil Corporation (the largest publicly traded oil company), I.P.A. Inc. (the largest Mid-West consulting and tax firm), and RE/MAX Today (the largest real estate brokerage firm in its market segment). Within these organizations he has held at least one of the following positions: CFO, COO, Controller and Senior Analyst.
Over the years his corporate expertise has solidified his career in financial reporting, tax strategies, business systems implementation, corporate development, and auditing. Under Mr. Canul's leadership, De Computis has been able to service a plethora of clientele (such as Venture Capital and Private Equity firms and investors and executives in various industries). This varied domestic and international experience affords Mr. Canul the distinction of serving as his clientele's domestic and international tax advisor, with an emphasis on privately held companies, controlled group accounting and tax structure.
Mr. Canul co-founded and recently served as Chairperson of the Board of Directors for Latino Business Professionals (LBP). LBP is an organization of more than 500 Bay Area professionals who work in the field of business, finance, private accounting and CPA firms. Mr. Canul is the former President of the San Francisco chapter, and co-founder of the Silicon Valley chapter, of the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA), the nation’s largest association of Hispanic CPAs and financial service professionals.
Mr. Canul maintains professional memberships in: CalCPA, the National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA), National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP), National Society of Accountants (NSA), the California Society of Enrolled Agents (CSEA), and National Association of Accountants, Tax Section (NAA), and the Institute of Management Accountants (I.M.A.). As part of the firm’s transaction practice, De Computis is one of the first independent firms in California to perform Quality of Earnings (EQA) and corporate accounting engagements for clients on the new IFRS International Financial Reporting Standards, both domestically and internationally.
Mr. Canul's community service has been publicly featured in US News & World Report and Fortune Magazine. He was honored with the National Humanitarian Award from the Education Commission of the States (ECS), was an Echoing Green National Service Fellow, was awarded the Campus Compact Swearer Service Award, was one of a select group of entrepreneurs honored by the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce as 2007 Entrepreneur of the Year and was honored as one the 50 Most Influential Latinos in Silicon Valley 2008.
Mr. Canul studied International Economics at Oxford University's prestigious Magdalen College in Oxford, England, and holds Bachelor of Art degrees in Political Science and English (Medieval Literature/Courtly Love Poetry) from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, where he was accepted into the honors program. Currently, Mr. Canul is pursuing his advanced studies in accounting as part of a Master's of Science degree in Taxation (M.S.T), with specialization in corporate tax.
Mr. Canul resides in San Jose, CA & Santa Monica, CA, is a recreational triathlete, avid reader and enjoys travel & cooking.
